4. Introducing LANs Flashcards
Three defining characteristics of LANs in contrast to WANs
- Typically higher data transfer rates.
- Smaller Geographic Area.
- Lack of need for leased telecommunication lines.
Name for any device that can send or receive data on a LAN
Hosts
Components that allow data to travel from one point to another in a network.
Interconnections
Devices like switches and routers that are responsible for data delivery between hosts.
Network Devices
These form the aggregation point for LANS. They operate at the Layer 2 of the OSI model.
Ethernet Switches
Sometimes called gateways, these provide a means to connect LAN segments and provide connectivity to the internet. They operate at Level 3 of the OSI model.
Routers
These provide wireless connectivity to LAN devices.
They operate at Layer 2 of the OSI model
APs (Access Points)
Rules that govern how data is transmitted between components of a network.
