4 Anatomy of the Immune System Flashcards
What are MALTs?
mucosa associated lymphatic tissues
When is the thymus at its’ largest?
infancy
What 3 hormones does the thymus produce?
Thymosin
Thymopoietin
Thymic Humoral Factors
What does Thymosin do?
stimulates T cell development
What does thymopoietin do?
enhanced T cell function
rate of skin development
What does Thymic Humoral Factor do?
increases immune responses to viruses
What are the functions of Lymph tissue? (5)
returns plasma proteins that have leaked into interstitial space
transports cellular debris
immunity
absorbs / transports fats from the digestive system
fluid balance
Why is lymph acidic?
it’s not, it’s usually alkaline
How is lymph formed?
from 10% pf the blood plasma that is has left circulatory capillaries
the other 90% just returns back to the venous drainage
What is chyle?
lymph produced by the small intestines
What is lymph comprised of?
96% water
4% solutes (proteins, lipids, carbs, electrolyes…)
How much lymph does the body produce, and at what rate does lymph flow?
3-4L of lymph per day
120 ml/hour
What proportion of lymph flows through the thoracic and right lymphatic ducts?
100ml through thoracic duct
20ml through right lymphatic duct
How many lymph nodes are in the body, and where are most of them distributed?
400-450
2/3 in the abdomen
How does lymph enter and exit lymph nodes?
enters through afferent channels, and leaves through efferent channels
