4. Abolition and immigration Flashcards
what did the abolition of slavery mean
many AA joined industrial workforce
many whites and european immigrants unwilling to work with AA
as a result of whites and European immigrants refusing to work with AA, at times of industrial unrest
employers were able to lay off white workers and replace them with AA
the fact that employers were able to lay off white workers and replace them with AA during time of industrial unrest meant
workers ability to strike was limited as they feared they would be replaced
employers able to sack any workers who attempted action = removal of men who might have been able to effectively lead unions
what was the situtation exacerbated by
arrival of large numbers of immigrants who were willing to work for low pay
the fact that immigrants made up much of semi-skilled and unskilled workforce meant
refusal to allow them to join unions further weakened organised labour
