it is an older alternative to ADSL

local area network
- network connected devices over a small geographical area
what is WAN
wide area network
- network connecting devices over a large geographical area
- involve infrastructure owned by more than one person or organisation
what is MAN
metropolitan area network
- network connecting devices over a town or city
- multiple buildings may be owned by 1 person or organisation
what is PSTN
public switched telephone network
what is cellular
wireless network for cellphones
- data and voice
- radio towers broadcast to the surrounding area ( a cell )
- flexible but can be black spots
what does PSTN do
wired network used for telephones
- fixed within a limited range
- audio quality is reliable and consistent
what is satellite
radio waves transmitted to and from space
- satellite phones can be used for audio calling
- can be used almost anywhere
- lag due to distance travelled
