3 / 4. Radio Failure 1 & 2 Flashcards
What are the procedures for Radio Failure in VMC? (5)
- Squawk 7600
- Use visual landing aids
- Watch for visual signals
- Report ARR to appropiate ATC unit
- Adopt IMC procedures if VMC can’t be maintained
What are the procedures for Radio Failure in IMC with Procedural separation? (3)
- ROCAS unless cleared by ATC, or for safety reasons
- Maintain last assigned speed, level for 20 minutes over a compulsory reporting point
- After the compulsory reporting point, change to level and speed from the FPL
What are the procedures for Radio Failure in IMC with ATS surveillance separation? (2)
- Squawk 7600
- Maintain last assigned level & speed for 7 minutes (time begins when 7600 set)
What are the procedures for Radio Failure in IMC when flying the SID? (2)
- Fly the SID, including any step climbs, then fly last assigned level & speed for 7 minutes
- Fly assigned level & speed from FPL until appropate landing aid at destination
What are the procedures for Radio Failure in IMC when flying the STAR? (2)
- Fly the SID, including any step descent, then fly last assigned level & speed for 7 minutes
- Decsend to minimum published FL at the IAF
What are the procedures for Radio Failure in IMC when flying en-route? (2)
- Fly level & Speed from FPL to appropiate landing aid at destination
- Attempt to transmit position reports (Inc. FL/Alt over reporting points)
What are the procedures for Radio Failure in IMC when flying radar vectors or RNAV? (2)
- Continue last instruction for 3 minutes
- Proceed directly to rejoin FPL route
- Remain above MSA
- Comply with “Loss of Comms procedures” from the UKAIP
What Rate of Descent minima should be used with Radio fauilure within a Holding Pattern? (1)
NOT LESS THAN 500 fpm
What are the ALDIS Lamp signals & meanings?
What Time limit should an A/C carry out the IAP with Radio failure? (2)
Within 30 minutes of:
- EAT (or)
- Calculated ETA
What are the procedures for Radio Failure in IMC when flying SVFR outside of the CTR? (2)
- Squawk 7600
- Transmit blind calls
- Remain outside CTR (Even if SVFR clearance obtained)

During radio failure, if a further emergency is encountered with the same A/C, what shall ATC expect the pilot to do? (1)
Sqawk 7700
If an ATCO establishes comms with an A/C again, what must the ATCO do? (1)
Inform the unit that initiated the RCF procedure
When may levels be re-allocated after an radio failed A/C should have vacated that level? (2)
- After 15 minutes
- 30 minutes - If A/C expected to leave the vicinity
