a function whose graph is a line
linear equation
represents a linear equation EXAMPLE y = 3x + 2
dependent variable
if a function is defined by an equation using x and y, then y is the dependent variable
independent variable
if a function is defined by an equation using x and y, then x is the independent variable
y intercept
the point at which the line crosses the y axis
x intercept
the point at which the line crosses the x axis
standard form of a linear equation
Ax + By = C where A, B, and C are real numbers (A and B aren’t 0)
slope
the ratio of the vertical change to a corresponding horizontal change
point slope form
the line through point (x1, y1) with slope m has the equation below
y-y1=m(x-x1)
slope intercept form
you can find it by using the equation
y=mx+b
(m is slope, b is slope intercept form)
