20.5 NS: Cranial nerves 1 Flashcards
What cranial nerve controls muscles of mastication?
Mandibular division of Trigeminal (CN V)
What are the somatic motor cranial nerves?
CN III
CN IV
CN VI
CN XII
What are the branchial arch cranial nerves?
CN V (mandibular division)
CN VII
CN IX
CN X
What is the nucleus ambiguus important for? Which cranial nerves (2) and which muscles? Where does it lie?
Mostly motor nucleus
Behind inferior olive
CN IX (stylopharyngeus) CN X (levator palati)
What are 4 nuclei that are needed for motor innervation to smooth msucles (visceral efferents) and which cranial nerves do they innervate?
Edinger-Westphal nucleus: CNIII
Superior salivatory nucleus: CNVII
Inferior salivatory nucleus: CNIX
Dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus: CNX
Where is the visceral afferent nucleus? What Does it get input from?
Medulla
Input from:
(special visceral afferent, taste)- CN VII, IX, X
Autonomic: X, IX
What nucleus is important for general visceral sensation? Where does it extend?
Nucleus solitarius
From pons to nucleus gracilis
What are the rostral and caudal contents of the nucleus solitarius?
Rostral: gustatory nucleus (primary afferents, taste buds/palate input, VII )
Caudal: visceral sensory division (X, heart, IX baro/chemoreceptors from carotid body/sinus)
What nerves are somatic sensory?
Face etc. CNV
Skin behind ear/external auditory meatus. CNVII, CNIX, CNX
What nerves are special sensory?
CN I, CNII, CNVIII
