20 - Electrolysis Flashcards
Electrolysis
The decomposition of an ionic compound when molten or in aqueous solution by electric current
Electrolyte
A molten ionic compound or an aqueous solution that is decomposed during electrolysis
Electrode
A rod of metal or carbon (graphite) which conducts electricity to or from an electrolyte
What happens at the cathode?
Reduction
What happens at the anode?
Oxidation
Faraday
The quantity of electric charge (in coulombs) carried by one mole of electrons or one mole of singly charged electrons
Electrode potential
The voltage measured for a half-cell compared with another half-cell
Half-cell
One half an electrochemical cell which either donates electrons or receives electrons from an external circuit when connected to another half-cell
Standard electrode potential
The voltage produced when a standard half-cell (ion concentration 1.00 mol dm3 at 298K) is connected to a standard hydrogen electrode under standard conditions
Standard cell potential
The difference in standard electrode potential between two specified half-cells
Feasible
Likely to take place
When is a reaction feasible?
Standard cell potential is positive
Discharged
Ions changed into atoms or molecules
