2. Population & Migration Flashcards
What is the Crude Birth Rate
Number of births per 1000 population per year
What is the Crude Death Rate
Number of deaths per 1000 population per year
How do we calculate the natural change in a population
Crude Birth Rate - Crude Death Rate
How do we know the Natural Increase and Decrease of a population
Crude Birth Rate > Crude Death Rate = Natural Increase
Crude Birth Rate < Crude Death Rate = Natural Decrease
What factors Increase Birth Rate
Children needed for work
Rural population
Short life expectancy
What factors Increase Death Rate
High levels of Infant deaths
Large elderly population
Short life expectancy
What factors Decrease Birth Rate
Artificial methods of Contraception
Later marriage
Compulsory education
What factors Decrease Death Rate
Clean water supply
Vaccination against diseases
Improved nutrition
Why is the Demographic Transition model useful
It is a simplification of population change within a country
We are able to compare population structure between countires & predict a country’s structure in the future
Why is the Demographic Transition Model not useful
It is Eurocentric (based on Europe only)
It ignores migration and government population policies
What are the 3 age groups used by geographers when studying population
Youth dependant population (0 - 14 yrs)
Economically active population (15 - 64 yrs)
Aged dependant population (65+ yrs)
What is the equation used to figure out the dependency ratio
Youth dependant + Aged dependant population/ Economically active population x100
What is a Emigrant
People who leave a place or country
What is an Immigrant
People who enter a place or country
What is the country or place form which the migrant begins called
The origin e.g Syria, Pakistan
