2: Introduction to the nervous system Flashcards
1
Q
What are the two main types of cells
A
- Neurones
- Glia
2
Q
What is the main role of neurons
A
Communication
3
Q
What is the main role of glia
A
Supporting the neurons
4
Q
What are some examples of neurons?
A
- Motor neurons
- Sensory neurons
- Cortical
- Cerebellar
- Basal ganglia etc
5
Q
What are some examples of glia
A
- Astrocytes
- Microglia
- Ependymal cells
- Oligodendrocytes
- Schwann cells
6
Q
Describe the features of neurons
A
- Carry electrical signals between brain area
- Electrically excitable
- Must have an input zone (dendrites) and an output zone (axon)
- Axons can be incredibly long so need to have specialisations to speed up conductions
7
Q
What is a synapse
A
The junction between nerve cells where a nerve impulse is transferred from one neuron to another
8
Q
What are the properties of electrical synapses?
A
- Communication is very fast
- Relies upon electrical connection
9
Q
What are the properties of chemical synapses?
A
- Communication is slower
- Relies upon chemical release of neurotransmitter that crosses the gap
- Complex series of events
- Neurotransmitter packaged in vesicles
- Synapse strength can be modified
