2 f) respiration Flashcards

1
Q

what is respiration?

A

the process that releases energy into every living cell of every organism. This energy is essential for keeping the cell alive as it powers processes like growth, repair and division

Q

what is anaerobic respiration?

A
  • Some cells have the ability to respire without using oxygen
  • Only liver and muscle cells can do this in humans
  • Anaerobic respiration allows the cell to carry on working despite there being a shortage of oxygen, this is very useful in muscle cells whilst doing exercise such as running.

Q

what does anaerobic respiration produces lactic acid?

A

It produces lactic acid, which is poisonous. It builds up inside muscle cells and quickly leads to muscle fatigue and cramp. Eventually the muscle cell will stop working.
