2-15 Pelvic Girdle Flashcards
what are the three pelvic bones that fuse together
- ilium
- ischium
- pubis
these join together at the acetabulum.
fuse together at late adolescence
gender differences between the pelvis
male
- thicker
- denser
- designed to support heavier build
female
- shorter
- wider
- thinner + less dense
- designed to fit all reproductive organs and allow for childbirth
intervertebral disc
ligament
between L5 and sacrum, allows for little movement
iliolumbar ligament
attachment: transverse process of L5 to crest of ilium
sacroiliac ligament
attachment: sacrum to ilium
allows little movement, consists of:
- posterior: strong
- anterior: rotational stability
- interosseus: strong
sacrococcygeal ligament
attachment: between the sacrum and coccyx
- allows for some movement
- consists of lateral, posterior and anterior
- contains intervertebral disc between S5 and C1
pubic ligament
forms pubic symphysis (between pubic bones)
- fibrocartilage disc
- prevents some expansion during childbirth
sacrotuberous ligament
iliac spines + sacrum to the ischial tuberosity
provides vertical stability
sacrospinous ligament
attachment: ischial spine to sacrum + coccyx
divides sciatic notch into greater and lesser sciatic foramina
what is the sacrum
a fusion of five sacral vertebrae of the spine
what is the sacrum
a fusion of five sacral vertebrae of the spine
