What is structuralism
getting patients to look inward, asking them how they felt, when they did certain activities, despite the name it was about introspection. it was to subjective to be useful.
What is functionalism
focused on why we think and feel, and do the things that we do, and he focused on function of behavior. based on Charles Darwin’s idea that adaptive behaviors are conserved throughout the evolutionary process.
What was the start on the free association technique?
Freud specialized in nervous disorders. witnessed his colleague, Josef Breuer, treat Anna O by talking. he just let her talk about her symptoms, the more she talked, the more her symptoms were reduced. From then on, Freud encouraged his patients to talk freely about whatever came to mind. made an entire branch of psychology.
What came out of Freuds “interpretation of dreams”
the theory that our personalities are shaped by unconscious motives, But the unconscienced was still discoverable.
How did Freud spend his last days?
He began his medical career at a Viennese hospital, but in 1886, he started his own practice where he invented free association. His Jewish family escaped from Germany to England during WW2, He smoked cigars and got jaw cancer, he had to have surgery, but continued to smoke. He got a friend to assist him in suicide by morphine.
what is behaviorism?
the study of observable behavior, the most popular form of psychology from WW2 to the 60’s, although psychodynamic theories still had great influence
What were the descendants of Freud’s theories?
psychodynamic theories. focused on the importance of early experiences in shaping the unconsciousness and how that process affects our thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and personalities
