15.4 Compressors - 5q Flashcards
Compound compressor does what? and is used where?
Combines axial and centrifugal compressors
Used in reverse flow combustion chamber
EGT and TIT (turbine inlet temperature) are?
Directly linked to each other
CDP?
Compressor Discharge pressure
bleed valves allow engine to?
run at low RPM without stalls or surges
Manifold in an air collection chamber known as?
Scroll
Scroll does what?
collects air from the diffuser and turns it 90º via cascade vanes and towards combustion chamber
Which compressor is in front of the other, Low or HIgh?
Low pressure compressor is in front of the high pressure compressor
First vanes on most compressors are?
Variable Inlet Guide Vanes (VIGV)
After the VIGV, the following 5/6 rows are known as?
Variable Guide Vanes (VGV), these are followed by compressor stator vanes
What materials are rotors and stators made of?
Rotor - titanium, nickel alloys
Stator - aluminium alloys, steel alloys, nickel alloys, titanium
The last row of stators act as? and do what?
Act as air straighteners and remove swirl before entering the combustion chamber
Stall and Surge?
Stall is the partial breakdown of air through the compressor
Surge is the complete breakdown of air through the compressor
At low RPM or on the ground, Bleed valves are biased?
OPEN
At high RPM, how is the bleed valve kept closed
The pressure of the High pressure compressor is enough to overcome the spring load on the bleed valve and keeps it shut
Compressor stator vane control system has?
- Stator Vane Actuator (SVA)
- Stator Vane Actuating Mechanism
