2
Q

Why is it called the fluid mosaic model

A

fluid - phospholipids are constantly moving
mosaic - proteins are randomly integrated in the model

Q

Role of glycoproteins in cells

A

-Binds to drugs/hormones/antibodies
-Stabilises the plasma membrane by forming hydrogen bonds with the plasma membrane
-Acts as antigens
-Ice crystals may also form and pierce the membrane

Q

Explain how the structure of the plasma membranes of beetroot changes with increasing temperature

A

1) Increase in temperature increases the fluidity of the phospholipids in the beetroot plasma membranes
2) At temperatures above 40 degrees the membrane begins to break down and the proteins in the membrane begin to denature
3) The membrane surrounding the vacuole becomes more permeable with increasing temperature
4) This means that pigments leak out of the distilled water
5) The more pigments released the higher the absorbance reading
