  1. Stop-go economics. manipulating budgets led to rising inflation. Macmillan failed to stem the economic decline by 1964 industrial production growing 10 x as quickly in Japan and 4 x as quickly in Germany.
  2. Share in world trade in manufactured goods fell from 25.5% to 13.9%- Macmillan
  3. Nicky, Neddy and the Pay Pause ultimately failed and inflation was a significant problem.
  4. 1961-64, exports grew only by 10% compared to 20% for imports, fuelling rampant inflation.
  5. Unemployment topped 800,000 in 1963.

  2. Macmillan failed to deal with increasing racial tension. Government did little to tackle hostility and discrimination in British society.

  3. Low taxation- Macmillan lowers to low of 38.75% before 1959 election.
  4. Home ownership 44%.
    TV ownership 91%.
  5. Expenditure increased under Conservatives, in real terms and as percentage of public expenditure- 39% to 43%.
  6. Surpassed 300,000 homes target- 1.3million built.
