1.3 Microscopy - What It Is Flashcards
What is microscopy
The use of microscopes
Draw and label a light microscope
Must contain:
Base
Arm
Light source (lamp or mirror)
Stage
Microscope slide
Objective lens (with different magnifications)
Eyepiece lens (fixed magnification)
Body tube
Course focusing knob (top)
Fine focusing knob (bottom)
In magnification what does the term object mean
The real object or sample that you are looking at
You have some onion cells on a microscope slide. Is this an object or image
Object
In microscopy terms what does image mean
The image is what we can see when we look down the microscope
If I look down the microscope at the onion on a microscope slide is this an image or object
Image
Draw what you would expect to see when looking at an onion cell under the microscope
Irregular rectangle shapes with dots
If the light source is a mirror on a light microscope how does light travel in the microscope
Light from surroundings will hit the mirror and light will be reflected through the object on the microscope slide, then through the objective lens and then through the eyepiece lens where it meets our eye
True or False:
The image we see is much larger than the object in a microscope
True
True or False:
The image we see is much smaller than the object in a microscope
False
True or false:
Light rays are spread out in a microscope
True
What is the definition of magnification
How many times larger the image is than the object
If the image is 1000x larger than the object what is the magnification
x1000
What is the magnification equation
Magnification = image size/ object size
What is the definition of resolution
- The shortest distance between 2 points of an object that can still be distinguished as 2 separate entities
The smallest distance 2 points can be apart before it become blurry
A measure of how detailed the image is
