1.3 Global Climate Change Flashcards

1
Q

What is the Greenhouse Effect?

A

The way that gases in the atmosphere trap heat from the Sun. Let heat in but prevent most of it from getting out.

Q

How does agriculture contribute?

A

Farming off Livestock and Rice Paddies emit Methane. (21 times more powerful than CO2)
When trees are cleared, it leaves CO2 in atmosphere as they absorb CO2.

Q

How does Energy contribute?

A

When fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas are burnt, it releases Carbon Dioxide (89% of greenhouse gases.
Most our energy comes from greenhouse gases.

Q

How does Transport contribute?

A

Many vehicles such as planes and cars release Nitrous Oxide.
Car ownership is increasing which means more cars on the roads.

Q

How does industry contribute?

A

They use a lot of energy and gases such as Hallocarbons (3000 time more powerful than CO2)
Some processes also release greenhouse gases.

Q

Global Temperature Rise

A

Steep rise in global temperatures recently
Has increased by 1°C since 1880.
10 warmest years have been since 2000.

Q

Decline in Arctic Sea Ice

A

Extent of Arctic Sea Ice has decreased by more than 3% each decade.
Higher temperatures mean more ice is melting.

Q

Sea Level Change

A

0.2m rise since 1901.
Glaciers/ Ice sheets melting causes sea levels to rise.
Thermal expansion.
