Patroon system

A

The Dutch West India Company wanted to increase the colony’s population, so it offered large land grants to anyone who could bring at least 50 settlers to work the land. Patroon leaders ruled like King and settlers owed the patroons labor and a share of their crops.

Jamestown and the House of Burgesses

A

Jamestown was the first successful colony. Tobacco was grown and exported to England from here. The House of Burgesses was the first elected governing assembly in the New World. The first meeting was to discuss the sales prices of Tobacco.

Who were the Puritans?

A

Were Protestants who wished to reform the Anglican Church. They Came to America for religious freedom- although they had very little tolerance for different beliefs. Strictly enforced their own religious beliefs. This lack of tolerance led people to form new colonies

A

Deadliest Witch Hunt in history of United States. Over 200 people were accused, 19 of whom were killed. Later the fungus found on rye and wheat explained the Behavior of “The Witches”. This shows how little TOLERANCE the Puritans had

A

A Protestant group that was persecuted in England and founded a colony in PA. They were very tolerant people that believed everyone was equal. Women had rights, they were pacifists and they had a good relationship with the Indians.

A

Protestants beginning to outnumber Catholics in Maryland, the colony’s legislature passed an Act of Toleration. The act of Toleration allowed Protestants and Catholics the right to worship freely

A

Puritan - people who wanted to PURIFY the Catholic Church, the wanted to make it better
Pilgrim - the group that actually came to America, they moved away from their homeland
Separatist - people who wanted to be SEPARATED from the Catholic Church
Protestants, people who stayed protestants after the king changed the Church.
