12 December Flashcards
Should you calculate renal function for a patient on dialysis?
No
What is the difference between haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis?
In haemodialysis the blood leaves the patient, and goes through a foreign machine.
What is a fistula?
What is a requirement to stop blood from clotting in a haemodialysis line?
Blood must be treated with a small dose of anticoagulant to stop it from clothing in the line
What must you consider about the renal function in dialysis patients?
Patients will be considered to have 10 mL per minute renal clearance, however during dialysis it usually reaches between 400 and 700 mL per minute.
When is epopoetin dosed in haemodialysis patient?
It is infused in the line towards the end of dialysis
What is a common complication of peritoneal dialysis?
Peritonitis
What is a risk factor for peritonitis in peritoneal dialysis patients?
Poor hygeine
When does peritoneal dialysis typically occur?
Overnight, every night
Which is most commonly used in FMC: APD or CAPD?
APD
How does peritoneal dialysis work?
A fluid is placed in the peritoneal space which draws out waste toxins and fluids, which is then dialysed out.
Which renal replacement therapy should you look at for renal replacement therapy?
High-flux
How does protein binding effect clearance in dialysis?
Highly protein-bound drugs will not be cleared as readily during dialysis
How does water solubility effect clearance in dialysis?
Increased water solubility increases clearance by dialysis.
What must you do if you don’t have a reference to support the use of a drug in a dialysis patient?
Use first principles of pharmacokinetic data
