Past participles are verb forms that can be used as adjectives. To form the past participle, place -ado on the end of the stem of -ar verbs and -ido on the stem of -er and -ir verbs.
hablar hablado
beber bebido
vivir vivido
the following verbs have irregular past participles:
abrir abierto cubrir cubierto decir dicho despertar despierto devolver devuelto escribir escrito hacer hecho morir muerto romper roto poner puesto ver visto volver vuelto
The past participle can be used as an adjective to indicate condition and is often used with the verb estar. You have already learned some of them, such as aburrido, cansado, and preocupado. Like other adjectives, they must agree in gender and number with the nouns they describe.
Los estudiantes están interesados en el arte.
The students are interested in art.
La galería no está abierta los lunes.
The gallery is not open on Mondays.
As is common with most adjectives in Spanish, a past participle can also be placed after the noun it describes.
Me gustan más sus obras pintadas.
I like his painted works better.
Salvador Dalí es un pintor conocido.
Salvador Dalí is a well-known painter.
