what caused the norman conquest?
- edward the confessor died without an heir but promised the throne to two people: harold godwinson and william of normandy
- harold was crowned because they wanted a strong leader to defend the country
- william claimed that he was promised the throne (1051) and harold had sworn to uphold this promise (1064) - he began planning his invasion of england
- william defeated harold in the battle of hasting in 1066 and then went on to conquer england

how did william of normandy persuade nobles to join his invasion force?
- he promised them land and wealth
- he gave them land that once belonged to the anglo-danish lords
how did normans change england?
- william consolidated the feudal system that was already developing - in return for loyalty, he distributed land to his followers who would then divide their land to reward their followers
- they took control the tax and justice systems
- set up the domesday survey (1085) to record who owned land, what it was worth and who lived on it (to find an efficient system of taxation) and abolished slavery after it (10% of people were slaves)
- took control of the church
- they built castles to show that they were a permanent presence

- 1069 - a failed rebellion which was led by the king of denmark → he responded to this by destroying rebels’ land and burning their crops
