11 - Ligament injuries Flashcards
what are ligaments?
dense bands of collagenous tissue
what do ligaments span?
a joint
where are ligaments anchored?
to the bone at either end
what type of fibres are present in ligaments?
collagen type 1 fibres
3 sensory aspects of fibres of ligament?
proprioception, stretch, sensory
compared to tendons, how much collagen do ligaments have?
lower % of collagen
compared to tendons, how much proteoglycans and water do ligaments have?
ligaments have a higher % of proteoglycans and water
compared to tendons, are ligaments more organised?
no - ligaments have less organised collagen fibres
compared to tendons, what are the fibroblasts of ligaments like?
ligaments have rounder fibroblasts
why do ligaments rupture?
the force exceeds the strength ligament
3 responses which aid healing of a ruptured ligament?
hypertrophic vascular response (stop bleeding), proliferative phase (scar tissue), remodelling (function persists)
why would a patient receive conservative treatment for a ruptured ligament?
poor candidate for surgery, no instability
why would a patient receive operative treatment for a ruptured ligament?
instability, expectation (e.g. sportsmen), compulsory
