1.1 Consequences of Atherosclerosis Flashcards
What are some of the consequences of Atherosclerosis?
- Coronary Heart Disease.
2. Myocardial Infraction (Heart attack)
What is CHD? (Coronary Heart Disease)
Narrowing of the coronary arteries limits the amount of oxygen rich blood reaching the heart muscle.
What is Chest Pain also known as? Why does it cause pain?
- Chest pain (angina)
- Heart muscle lacks oxygen and is force to respire anaerobically.
What happens when Fatty plaque in the coronary arteries ruptures?
Fatty plaque in coronary arteries ruptures, cholesterol is released=clot formation.
-Blood supply to heart is blocked completely.
What is it called when heart muscles does not receive any blood?
Heart muscles supplied by these arteries does not receive any blood (ischaemic, without blood).
What happens when affected heart muscles are starved of oxygen for a long period of time?
Affected muscles starved of oxygen for long=damaged ; Heart attack (myocardial infraction)
