10.2- Genetics Flashcards
Who is considered the father of genetics
Gregor Mendel
What did Gregor Mendel study
various traits in pea plants
What is F1 and F2
F1 is the offspring of parental cross, F2 is the offspring of F1.
Explain what an allele
an alternative form of a single gene
How many alleles do we have for every gene
2
Describe a recessive allele
masked if a dominant allele is present.
How are dominant alleles represented
with a capital letter
When are recessive alleles expressed
when both alleles are recessive
What is a homozygous organism
organism with two of the same alleles for a particular trait
What is a Heterozygous organism
organism with two different alleles for a particular trait (Yy).
In heterozygous individuals, the dominant trait will be observed.
What is a genotype
an organism’s allele pairs (true genetics).
what is a phenotype
he observable characteristic or outward expression of an allele pair.
Law of segregation
two alleles for each trait separate during meiosis. During fertilization, two alleles for that trait unite, producing heterozygous organisms called hybrids.
Monohybrid cross
a cross that involves hybrids for a single trait.
Dihybrid cross:
a cross that involves the inheritance of two or more traits.
