Q

State two reasons why it has been difficult to develop an assay to screen donors for variant Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease (vCJD) 2 marks

A
  • Because prions do not have detectable nucleic acids NAT (nucleic acid testing) is therefore not possible. - There is a lack of specificity between normal human prion (PrPC) and diseased prion (PrPSc) which the assay cannot detect.
