1 Flashcards
what is a thermoelectric cell?
thermocouples combined to produce greater amounts of electricity
what is a photovoltaic cell?
used to produce electricity from light (usually composed of silicon)
what are electrodes?
different types of metal in a voltaic cell that have different attractions for electrons
what is an electrolyte?
a substance that conducts an electric current through movements of ions
piezoelectric effect??
converting electric current into motion and then sound
ex. singing birthday cards
reverse piezoelectric effect??
motion into electricity and then heat
ex. bbq lighter
how does a photovoltaic cell work?
converts light into electricity, light is absorbed by a silicon material allowing the electrons to break loose and flow
ex. solar panels
how is electricity created in an electrochemical cell?
one of the electrons breaks down into ions allowing the electrolyte to conduct electrical energy
primary cell? secondary cell?
primary= not rechargeable secondary= rechargeable
what type of cell has the greatest energy per mass??
zinc air cell (smallest in size and weight)
main components of a voltaic cell and their function??
electrodes(2)- one gains electrons and one loses them
electrolyte- conducts electricity
difference between a battery and a cell??
battery- more than one cell
cell- single voltaic cell
how does magnetism create electricity??
magnet pulls electrons through conducting wire which creates and electrical flow
what is an electromagnet??
a coil of copper wire and a magnet that produces an electric current
two ways an electromagnet can be made stronger??
- more wraps of wire
- increase strength of core material
