About ESL on Brainscape

What is ESL?

The term ESL or learning English as a second language started to be used in the 1960s. English is taught differently depending on if the learner is a child, a teenager or an adult.

ESL also refers to learning English as a second language in an instruction program based in an English-speaking country such as the US or the UK. Don’t worry too much about differences in UK and US English as they are almost the same. You should base your decision on the course, the costs, and the cultures.

There is lots of helpful advice on the ESL Directory website, along with a list of programs in the US. If you would like to take a course in the UK, then you can check out the UK ESL Directory. Why not try out the ESL Top Ten Tips to Learning English?

Learning ESL

Learning English can be tough. Students from different countries face different challenges; English can sound strange and saying the words is not easy!

Expert language learners who are learning their third and fourth languages often start learning a new language by watching kids programs as the words are easy and sounded and spelled out slowly. Brainscape is a great study tool for ESL students and will help you build your vocabulary and master English.

There are thousands of ESL flashcards made by students just like you to choose from on this page. You can also try out the Brainscape Vocab Builder certified course. At Brainscape, you can also write your own English flashcards from your study notes.

Learn Faster in Brainscape

You can learn twice as fast and remember longer with Brainscape’s Confidence-Based Repetition (CBR) system.

It is also free to use the flashcards on this page. The CBR system is made up of three learning methods: active recall, metacognition, and spaced repetition. The CBR system helps you to learn fast by focusing on your weak areas.

To get started just click on ‘make flashcards’ at the top of the page or a deck below. Good Luck!
